RECAP: Rime & Toper “Snap Back – Dangerous Drawings About NY” Opening at Klughaus Gallery NY

Last Saturday, we had our anniversary show at Klughaus Gallery featuring RIME & TOPER.  This was our final show at the 47 Monroe space before we move to a new location in 2013!  We will definitely miss this place.  The title of the show, “Snap Back – Dangerous Drawings About NY” lived up to it’s name as the Fire Department & NYPD showed up because there were so many people that came to see the show.  A catalog of the remaining pieces is available on our website: http://./images/flyers/klughaus_rime_toper_catalog.pdf

Special thanks to our sponsor Beer Right Now!

The show is up through Jan. 1, 2013.  We are open Thurs & Fri from 1-7pm and Sat & Sun from 12-6pm (and any other day or time by appointment.)

Story about the painting by RIME above:

“Teenagers on a pigeon infested rooftop painting with a twin brother lookout on the street level. Lookout all decked out in a flashy white track suit looking as if he’s slinging on the block. Cops roll up interrogating and notice his eyes stray to the roof. Laying across a few inch spread of pigeon shit you further flatten to avoid the maglite shine. New Yankee cap has been officially violated. Hold tight but disgusted until they bounce. No desire to finish, just the urge to strip to minimum, get home and disinfect.”

Exhibit Recap: Jurne “Keys To The City” up through Dec. 1, 2012 at Klughaus Gallery

We had the pleasure of working with Jurne on his solo show debut, “Keys To The City” at Klughaus Gallery on Saturday. After watching him spend multiple days and nights (literally sleeping in the gallery) preparing for the show, we could tell that he was very dedicated and serious about his work. Jurne even ended up cutting all the mats to his pieces by himself! In the end, all his hard work and attention to detail paid off! It was one of the most packed openings we’ve had. Most importantly, there were no shortage of red dots popping up through the night!

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported! Special thanks to Ironlak and Beer Right Now for making this a successful show!

Jurne “Keys To The City” will be up through Dec. 1, 2012

*We are also open by appointment any day of the week.

Check out some photos from the opening below…

The map pieces below are one of a kind.  Jurne found vellum maps of Parisian neighborhoods while exploring an abandoned electrical facility in Paris.  He found patterns on the maps and then painted them on the backsides.  He then layered colored paper to create more pattern and finally  detailed the work w/ his signature typography.  Believe me, you need to see these pieces in person because the photos don’t do them justice!

While most people design screen prints on the computer these days, Jurne exposes the screens for his prints using paper cut outs.  The print “Mars” below was specifically made for the show.  They are also hand embellished in an edition of 7.  An original paper cut was also on display in the photo below the print.

There was a series of layered decollage pieces.  These were all hand cut with precision and layered on top of a painting underneath.  It is very hard to appreciate the detail of these pieces unless you see them in person!

Speaking of “Two of A Kind”, here’s some sneak peaks of a recent shoot that Tom Gould did with Raekwon wearing the Snowbeach pullover (that he made famous in the ‘Can it Be All So Simple‘ Video) next to a Grotesk piece from our inaugural show ‘Home For The Holidays’ back in December.  Can’t wait to see the actual photos from this shoot!

NYC Plans for Forsyth Plaza Park in Chinatown (Mini-High Line?)

Last year, we noticed that a bunch of the graffiti covered delivery trucks had disappeared from Forsyth street right by the base of the Manhattan Bridge.  It turns out that there was police crackdown on the unsanitary practices including food vendors who would “pee in a bag and throw it out on the street and never clean it up.”  I guess the city is now taking it a step further in trying to make the area a lot nicer for the community.  (Personally, I love the gritty/grimey aspects of Chinatown)

Below are some proposed renderings for the re-vamp of the base of the Manhattan Bridge to be known as Forsyth Plaza Park.  The “Asian Americans for Equality” organization is involved in this project scheduled for 2014 if it gets approved by the Public Design Commission.

I guess the condition that the spot is in today is definitely a step up from the early 90′s, when the area was a squat/shantytown.  Below is a photo of the are from 1992:
